PhD Juanita Olano-Marin

I am broadly interested in the evolutionary, behavioral, and ecological causes and consequences of genetic variation in natural populations of vertebrates. I use genetic information of wild populations to unravel processes that are not easy or even impossible to study with field observations alone (e.g. population structure, dispersal patterns, parentage, hybridization). I am also interested in the use of genetic information for supporting conservation strategies of endangered species and populations. My research spans the fields of population genetics, molecular ecology, landscape genetics and behavioral ecology. I have investigated heterozygosity-fitness correlations in wild bird populations according to the characteristics of the molecular markers employed, the demographic processes occurring in the populations, and the level of inbreeding of the individuals. As a postdoctoral fellow at the MRI PAS I am investigating the genetic population structure of the European roe deer in north-eastern Poland and its relation with characteristics of the habitat.
