Mammal Research Institute PASMammal Research Institute PAS (MRI) is located in southern part of Podlasie, in a small village of Białowieża (2,000 inhabitants) in the heart of the 1500-km2 Białowieza Primeval Forest, straddling the Polish-Belarussian border.
Strategy for development of the Mammal Research Institute,
Polish Academy of Sciences
Mission of MRI PAS:
To contribute to the sustainable development at the regional and national level through acquiring, advancing, and disseminating knowledge of the natural patterns and processes of biodiversity in general and mammals in particular.
Build up the scientific potential and research capacity of MRI PAS by investing in its human capital, material infrastructure, and e-communication with research market, for improving MRI participation in European research cooperation, improving the basis for effective nature conservation activities, and transferring knowledge to stakeholders, enterprises, and the public.
Strategic directions for scientific research:
(1) Quantitative genetics and genetic molecular methods to study diversity of mammals and viability of their populations on the scale of local population, landscape, region, and biogeographic (European) zones, in the context of man-made habitat fragmentation and habitat connectivity (hereafter GENETICS);
(2) Advanced ecological (remote sensing, satellite telemetry, GIS tools, mathematical modelling) and ecophysiological methods (including genetic molecular tools) to study the interplay between organismal physiology and population ecology in the context of climate change (ECOLOGY);
(3) Interactions between society and the environment on the regional and national scale in the perspective of the EU policies and legislation concerning biodiversity conservation and sustainable development (SUSTAINABILITY).
