The seminar "Conflicts between beaver conservation, agriculture and forestry. How to improve preventative measures, the damage compensation system and increase public acceptance of conservation”
news 17-11-2011 ...back

The seminar, organized by the Mammal Research Institute PAS in Białowieża and the Regional Directorate of State Forestry (SF) in Białystok, was attended by approximately 100 people. Among participants were present representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Regional Directorate of State Forests, General and Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection, national and landscape parks, universities and research institutions, regional and local authorities and the Podlasie and Warmia and Mazury Agricultural Chamber.
The seminar participants listened to 12 presentations featuring the location, number, impacts of beavers and ways to minimize damage caused by these animals. The first lecture presented models of population management and methods to minimize and resolve conflicts between beavers and people in three countries near Poland: Lithuania, Germany and Sweden. The effects of beaver activity, the extent of damage and ways to minimize this in the Podlasie and Warmia-Mazury Region were presented by representatives of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection. The presentations demonstrated that the current approach to mitigating conflicts between beavers and people are insufficient, owing to the high levels of damage in the region. Some of the presentations provided results of studies of beavers from different areas. Research on beavers opened discussion about methodologies for monitoring of the species. The seminar was ended with a lecture by a representative of the General Directorate for Environmental Protection on the laws regarding management at beavers.
The seminar emphasised the need to prepare and adopt beaver management strategies based on comprehensive performed inventories and evaluation of environmental conditions. The discussion stressed the need for cooperation between scientists, general and local political authorities, foresters, hunters, site managers and nature conservation agencies.
